When Is a Dental Crown Necessary?

A dental crown or “cap” may be necessary for a variety of reasons:

  • Protection from breaking for a weak tooth that is severely decayed

  • To hold together pieces of a cracked tooth

  • Restore a broken tooth that has become extremely worn down

  • When there is not a lot of tooth left, used to cover and support the tooth such as with a large filling

  • Used to hold a dental bridge in place

  • To mask or hide discolored or deformed teeth

  • Hide or cover a dental implant

Consult the professionals at West Allis Dental Care the minute you suspect that your tooth is being compromised due to decay or injury. We will carefully evaluate the tooth to determine if a crown or another dental procedure is required.

A crown can save your smile – contact West Allis Dental Care and inquire about our Dental Protection Plan to help you cover out-of-pocket expenses. Call 414-258-2500 today.

What Types of Crowns Are Commonly Used?

Before your permanent crown is created, you receive a temporary crown that you will wear for approximately one week. Patients are given a permanent crown choice based on their specific situation and dentist recommendation.  Some general choices are:

  • Metal: ideal for hidden molars, metal crowns rarely chip, break or wear down. Less tooth structure needs to be removed as compared to other crown materials. Usually, the metals used are gold alloy or a base-metal alloy such as nickel or chromium

  • Porcelain-fused-to-metal: can be used for either front or back teeth, porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns resemble normal teeth the most. These crowns may chip or break more in comparison to metal crowns

  • All-resin: one of the more economical crown choices, all-resin dental crowns may wear down over time and resemble natural teeth

  • All ceramic or all-porcelain: one of the best matches to tooth color, both crown types are ideal for patients who may have a metal allergy. Ceramic and porcelain crowns are a good choice for front teeth

We know that quality dental work can cost a fair amount. That’s why West Allis Dental Care offers the highest quality crowns and bridges for a reasonable price. Plus our Dental Protection Plan can help you pay for the expenses your insurance may not cover.
